Powder for 45 70 of Technology
There's a sight somewhere with a bunch of sub data for any lever gun cartridge. While keeping in mind I only have 100 or so rounds of 45-70 loaded with TiteGroup I've been very impressed. 10.0 grains, hitek coated 405's, Starline brass, and getting SD's of 3.6/ES of 10 for a 10 shot string. Average velocity was 1015.The pistol powders that have been mentioned work also for just plinking at very low speed c1000 fps. I use H4198, Varget, RL 7 and Trailboss. Marlin League #54. Just a quick note that there are some loads (NOT for 45-70, lol) for smokeless that require slight compression, if you can call crunching a few sticks of powder compression. In all cases, those will be loads you work up to and as a general rule of thumb something most folks should avoid.I found this information in the Hodgdon manual for Benchmark and the 45-70 (they list a Benchmark load for a 350 grain Hornady JRN bullet 56.0 - 60.0C, for a 405 grain Speer JFP bullet they list 55.0 - 58.5C). I really like the idea of a compressed load for this cartridge. With Varget, I get a mildly compressed load at 58.0 grains.The 45-70 is a black powder case whose total capacity was filled with black powder by necessity to avoid detonation with black powder from an air space.
